Who is eligible to participate in the Customer Choice Program?

All residential and commercial customers are eligible. Certain large commercial and industrial customers must comply with local Utility minimum term requirements.

What if I do not wish to switch to a new supplier?

That is your choice. If you choose to remain a sales customer of your Utility, the price that you pay for your gas supply will be determined by your Utility as authorized by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).

If I am on the budget billing program, can I participate in Customer Choice?

Yes. If you are currently on Budget Billing, you may remain on Budget Billing.

If I choose an alternative supplier to purchase gas on my behalf, do I still pay my utility any charges?

Yes. You will continue to pay your utility its Monthly Customer Service Charge and Distribution Charge. The amount you agree to pay your new, alternative supplier for the gas it has purchased on your behalf will be billed and collected by your utility, just as it always had been.

Will I continue to pay sales tax on my entire bill if I switch suppliers?

Yes. Your bill will include sales tax on the total bill.

Who will deliver the gas to my home and will the quality of my service change?

Your local utility will continue to deliver gas to your home and respond to any service requests you may have. You will still receive a bill from the utility each month. You will pay your utility for both its charges and your new supplier's charges. Your utility will pay your new supplier on your behalf.

How do I sign up with a new supplier?

You can sign up via the internet, by mail, or if you are contacted by an authorized customer care center, you may sign up over the telephone. You will need to provide your name, address and the account and meter numbers (if necessary) to sign up with a new supplier. All of the previous information can be found on your most recent utility bill. Your new supplier will send your sign-up information to your utility. To avoid unauthorized switching, do not disclose specific account information if you do not want to be switched to a new supplier.

Is there a sign up period?

No. You can sign up anytime as long as there is there is a program offered in your service area and you are current with all payments. Usually, service from your new gas supplier will begin two to six weeks after you sign up. Participation in the program is strictly voluntary.

How long will it take to switch?

Switching takes approximately two to six weeks, depending on your billing cycle.

Can I switch from one supplier to another?

Yes. You can switch to another supplier at any time. However, be sure to ask your potential suppliers if there is a cancellation fee or a minimum contract length. You can switch back to your Utility’s sales service, but may need to remain with the Utility for 12 consecutive billing cycles before you can choose another alternate supplier.

How do I cancel my contract?

You must contact the alternate supplier you are currently under contract with to determine if there are any fees associated with your cancellation. If there are, you may be required to fulfill those obligations.

Do I have to pay a fee if I switch suppliers?

You are allowed to switch suppliers once each year (12 consecutive months) without a fee. There is a $10.00 switching fee for each additional switch within a twelve month period.

Are the rates of suppliers regulated like my utility rate is regulated?

No. It is up to you to determine if a supplier meets your needs. Be sure you understand the terms of the contract and the price you will pay, including any additional administrative fees the supplier may charge. If you have questions or problems concerning your gas supply, you must contact the supplier.
